About us

WHO WE ARE

Flavour School is a registered charity in England and Wales, founded in 2016, with the mission to promote sensory food education as a way to help children develop healthier, happier relationships with food and eating.

We believe that all children should benefit from sensory food education - learning about the senses, taste and flavour, to develop more confidence and curiosity to try new foods.

We created the Flavour School programme to make it easy for schools and nurseries to introduce sensory food education, enabling more children to enjoy exploring food with all their senses and to express their food experiences and preferences with confidence.

What we do

We provide teaching resources, ideas, advice and support to schools and nurseries, health professionals, and food education specialists, to embed sensory food education and the Flavour School programme into classrooms and other educational settings.

Teaching resources: Our Reception and Key Stage 1 Starter Programme Teaching Manual provides a set of lesson plans to help you get going with sensory food education in your school. It is designed to be as easy to use as possible, and is available to download for free - we just ask you for a few details to help us understand our users. We'd love to hear about your experiences with the programme, and we'd appreciate any feedback that can help us to improve it. We're working on a starter pack for early years/nursery (please contact us if you’re interested in helping to develop/pilot this), and additional resources for teachers ready to go beyond the Starter Programme.

Support: If you think you might benefit from support to get started or to go further with Flavour School and sensory food education, contact us to discuss how we could help.

Collaboration: If your organisation specialises in public health or food education, and you are interested in building sensory food education into your work, please contact us to discuss how we might collaborate.

Research: Together with the School of Food science and Nutrition at the University of Leeds, we're conducting research trials in primary schools in London and Leeds, to measure the impact of Flavour School on children's enjoyment of exploring food and flavour. If your school is interested in participating in the research project, please contact us to find out more.

SUPPORTERS

We are very grateful to ARK Franklin Primary Academy in London for making a generous donation from the proceeds of its wonderful 2018 Fork to Fork Festival, to support the development of Flavour School.

We have partnered with Ella’s Kitchen, to research and promote sensory food education in the UK. Alongside supporting our research, Ella’s launched the world’s first 'Eat Along Book’ made just for little ones to explore a variety of foods at mealtimes during their weaning adventure. The book encourages tiny fingers to get hands on with their food, helping little ones to develop + learn important hand-eye coordination skills through sensory play. Proceeds from sales go towards supporting Flavour School to train teachers and get kids exploring food and flavour with all their senses. To purchase a copy of the book, all the details are on the website: https://www.ellaskitchen.co.uk/eat-along-book/

DONATIONS

If you would like to make a donation to support Flavour School, please click on the Donate button below; alternatively do contact us if you’d like to discuss it first. We are, for now, a very small charity with limited funding, so every penny donated is hugely appreciated and will help us to grow and to get more children involved in Flavour School. Many thanks to everyone who's donated so far!
